Next BY JHOVE! Session, Tuesday 10 June
by Georgia Moppett 04 Jun '25

04 Jun '25

Dear all, A reminder for next week; our *next meeting is Tuesday 10th June 14.00 CEST*. This session will run as usual with breakout rooms. We would like to know your opinion on whether we should continue to run these sessions over the summer; we are happy to do so if you wish to attend. We are aware that many are away for this time, but if we are aware of your intention to attend we will happily host the sessions for July and August. Just let me know! As mentioned previously, the next step for our User Friendliness pillar is the prototype of a web application for a NEW GUI for JHOVE based on initial feedback (and kindly built by Darren!). We hope to eventually incorporate this through all JHOVE applications, and would *love* your feedback throughout its development: The early-stages of the new GUI can be tried here: https://jhovereact.opf-labs.org/ The GitHub repo, and Discussion thread can be found here: https://github.com/opf-labs/jhove-next Please don't forget to continue updating our ongoing task spreadsheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tpVF8MhfWSJEXc61y9Gu9cO9nLfK3tf6kon…> as it helps guide future sessions. We look forward to meeting with you all next week. BY JHOVE! Second Plenary Recap
by Georgia Moppett 16 May '25

16 May '25

Dear all, Thank you to those who were able to attend our second plenary session this week at the* By JHOVE! Explain Yourself* meeting. These quarterly sessions are from both group members, and OPF members on how JHOVE is used within their institutions. Our May session saw Jacob Takema and Lotte Wijsman present ‘Developing a WARC conformance checking tool <https://openpreservation.org/events/by-jhove-explain-yourself-plenary-sessi…> ’. PDFs of the slides can be found in the Shared Drive here <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1UBmKj-8r353vRJn8SEko0Et6oLGsoq54>. If you have any questions we encourage you to follow up with them! If anyone can't access the presentations in the Shared Drive and would like a copy, please let me know. Their WARC tool is an incredible effort, again a big thank you to Lotte and Jacob for all their work on presentation. Please don't forget to continue updating our ongoing task spreadsheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tpVF8MhfWSJEXc61y9Gu9cO9nLfK3tf6kon…> as it helps guide future sessions. Minutes from previous sessions can also be found in the Shared Drive. The next *BY JHOVE! *session will be *June 10th at 14.00 CEST*. We look forward to seeing you. BY JHOVE! A New GUI is available for testing
by Georgia Moppett 16 May '25

16 May '25

Dear all, As demonstrated in our *BY JHOVE! Explain Yourself *session earlier this week, Darren has built a prototype of a web application for a NEW GUI for JHOVE based on initial feedback. We hope to eventually incorporate this through all JHOVE applications, and would *love* your feedback throughout its development. The early-stages of the new GUI can be tried here: https://jhovereact.opf-labs.org/ The GitHub repo, and Discussion thread can be found here: https://github.com/opf-labs/jhove-next This development is the first step in what we hope to be many new efforts in the User Friendliness pillar of this working group. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or are looking for clarification. Have a great weekend! Plenary BY JHOVE! Session, next Tuesday, May 13th
by Georgia Moppett 07 May '25

07 May '25

Dear all, Our next *BY JHOVE! *session will be next *Tuesday, May 13th at 14.00 CET. *This will be our second Plenary. From the National Archives of the Netherlands, Jacob Takema and Lotte Wijsman will talk about their process and (future) development. Additionally, they will also give a demo of their WARC conformance checking tool <https://openpreservation.org/events/by-jhove-explain-yourself-plenary-sessi…>. We look forward to seeing you there! We have been experimenting with the Shared Drive to ensure that everyone can see and engage with the resources as they want to, and so those who had issues accessing certain pages before should be able to see them now. Please let me know if this still isn't the case after next week's session. Please don't forget to continue updating our ongoing task spreadsheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tpVF8MhfWSJEXc61y9Gu9cO9nLfK3tf6kon…> as it helps guide future sessions. We look forward to meeting with you all next week. Next ByJHOVE! meeting Tuesday, March 11th
by Georgia Moppett 05 Mar '25

05 Mar '25

Hi all, I hope you've been well recently. Our next *BY JHOVE! *meeting will be next *Tuesday, March 11th at 14.00 CET*. For this session we have created a new Errors and Warnings breakout room, adjacent to the existing rooms (PDF-HUL 45 “Malformed filter”, TIFF-HUL 6 “Count mismatch for tag <tag>; expecting <minCount>, saw <count>”, PDF-HUL 85 “No document catalog dictionary” + PDF-HUL 33 “Improperly nested dictionary delimiters”) we will also have *PDF-HUL 66 “Lexical Error”*. Adjacent to the breakout rooms for this session, we will be running a highly-requested *GitHub training*. This will be perfect for beginners to attend and learn lots of new skills. To best learn from this session, we would like for you to create a GitHub account <https://docs.github.com/en/get-started/start-your-journey/creating-an-accou…> before the meeting so you can follow along better. An alternative and ongoing resource to accompany the training: Lotte's *Bits and Bots* study group is back for a second year, and brings together professionals eager to learn digital skills in a collaborative and supportive environment. Sign up for their kick off sessions and read more about it in their OPF blog <https://openpreservation.org/blogs/study-group-bits-and-bots-here-we-go-aga…>. From their study group last year, Lotte has made an <https://github.com/Lotte-W/Bits-and-Bots-study-group/tree/main/Expert_sessi…> extensive guide <https://github.com/Lotte-W/Bits-and-Bots-study-group/tree/main/Expert_sessi…> here with a lot of images to help. This may also help you with the work we do in this group and give you a better grounding in working with GitHub, etc. Please don't forget to continue updating our ongoing task spreadsheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tpVF8MhfWSJEXc61y9Gu9cO9nLfK3tf6kon…> as it helps guide future sessions. We look forward to meeting with you all next week. Next meeting for By JHOVE! Explain Yourself!
by Georgia Moppett 06 Feb '25

06 Feb '25

Hi all, *Tuesday 11th February at 14.00 CET*, will be our next *By JHOVE!* meeting. Thank you to those who attended our first plenary meeting in January, it was great to see you there :) Our previous session had two presentations from members of this group on how JHOVE is used within their institutions. PDFs of these can be found in the Shared Drive here <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1UBmKj-8r353vRJn8SEko0Et6oLGsoq54>. It's been a few weeks, but we encourage you to follow up if you had any questions or queries from these presentations: - If you have any questions about CSC's 'File Validation Tools, File Scraper & JHOVE' presentation, please reach out to them on their support email: pas-support(a)csc.fi <pas-support(a)csc.fi>. - Or, if you have any questions for Sofi about 'Workflows for file format identification and validation error treatment at Digital Archives Flanders', please forward them to sofie.ruysseveldt(a)vlaanderen.be. Their presentation did have some prompt questions on their 'Considerations' slide, so please do review these at your leisure. Thanks again to our speakers! It was really interesting to hear how JHOVE is used within your organisations. This upcoming session will return to our usual Breakout Rooms format. The Documentation tracks will remain the same, and Errors and Warnings will remain mostly the same; many have requested to continue working on their issue. We will also initiate discussions about the development of the GUI. I will follow up after for anyone who is unable to attend as to how they can get involved and may wish to. Please don't forget to continue updating our ongoing task spreadsheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tpVF8MhfWSJEXc61y9Gu9cO9nLfK3tf6kon…> as it helps guide future sessions. If anyone can't access the presentations in the Shared Drive and would like a copy, please let me know. Minutes from previous sessions can also be found in the Shared Drive. To those who have emailed about receiving GitHub training, we will be organising something in the near future. We are just figuring out the logistics - so keep an eye out! We look forward to meeting with you all next week. follow up from today's meeting for PDF-HUL-45 breakout group
by Lindlar, Micky 12 Nov '24

12 Nov '24

Hi all, following up from today's meeting, I have made some small changes to the PDF-HUL 45 Wiki at https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/wiki/PDF-hul-Messages#pdf-hul-45 : - Updated the reference to point to PDF 2.0 - Removed the example file links as they were broken - Added the info: "Note that for JHOVE versions up to including 1.28, this error message was also a false positive for filter arrays such as "/Filter[/FlateDecode/DCTDecode]" I've also added a github issue to figure out what exactly is being checked as far as filter dictionary logic goes, because I couldn't provoke the error. For that, see: https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/issues/971 . Maybe some Java-savy people in the group can discover what logic is actually being checked in pdfstream.java ? Please let me know if you would like to see something else added. Thanks for your work on this, everyone!
