Dear list, after installing latest devel release (from 1.9.48 to 1.9.89), I have found that a PDF/A-3a file with a digital signature that uses the standard Courier font isn’t embedded. [Users] Make and validate PDF/A-2A based on Word document

Dear users of veraPDF, We are figuring out how to make good, future-proof PDF's based on our day-to-day documents, which are mostly Word documents (DOC and DOCX). For the moment, we are using Word 2016 for Windows. Here, you can choose to save as a PDF/A (save as PDF > options > Conform with PDF/A). When I validate the resulting PDF using veraPDF with PDF/A flavor = auto-detect, it passes (hooray for Microsoft). Looking at the validation report, I see that it gets validated as a PDF/A-3A. This is where it gets interesting. The test document was a simple text document - like most of the documents we create, maybe supplemented with some images. So, I would like to make my document in conformance with PDF/A-2A, as there should not be any embedded file in this simple PDF. In Word, there is no option to make your document in conformance with specific flavors. When I validate the document with veraPDF with flavor PDF/A-2A, I only get 1 error: Rule Status Specification: ISO 19005-2:2011, Clause: 6.6.4, Test number: 2<https://github.com/veraPDF/veraPDF-validation-profiles/wiki/PDFA-Parts-2-an…> The value of pdfaid:part shall be the part number of ISO 19005 to which the file conforms. Failed 1 occurrences Show<file:///C:/Users/degroofs/AppData/Local/Temp/veraPDF-tempHTMLReport4783092570292827590.html> So, I guess this means that my document says it isn't a PDF/A-2A, but a PDF/A-3A instead. So, this seems to be a metadata issue. My main question: can I safely ignore this message or change the metadata of my document to make it in conformance with PDF/A-2A? I also went a step further to test this: I opened the PDF document in Notepad++ and I think I found the metadata part in question (using the veraPDF wiki as a guideline). There is this RDF part almost at the bottom that goes like this: <pdfaid:part>3</pdfaid:part><pdfaid:conformance>A</pdfaid:conformance> If you change the 3 in a 2 and save it, the document validates as a PDF/A-2A!!! So mainly 2 questions: 1. Is this safe? 2. Is there a less dirty way to change the flavor of my PDF document in the metadata? Thanks for any help. Hi, I am trying to build VeraPDF from based on the instructions in the README.md I am building the software on a RHEL7 server with OpenJDK 1.8.0_151 (and I am aware that the readme says Java 7) and it is the latest release source that are being used. However, when using the "mvn clean install -P clone-test-resources" I get the following warning - " [WARNING] The requested profile "clone-test-resources" could not be activated because it does not exist". Has I missed something or isn't the Readme up-to date? The build ends succesfully but when I try to start by issuing the "java -jar gui/target/gui-1.8.0.jar" I get the message " No main manifest attribute, in gui/target/gui-1.8.0.jar". Is this due to trying to use Java 8 or is it related to something else? Thanks in advance, Bengt Neiss

Hi We have integrated veraPDF validation-model 1.8.1 from the maven repo (https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.verapdf/validation-model) into the eHealth Connector Open Source project (see https://sourceforge.net/projects/ehealthconnector/). See https://sourceforge.net/p/ehealthconnector/wiki/CDA%20Validation/ for more information. The eHealth Connector API is converted by IKVM.net into a .Net DLL and is therefore available on both platforms While validating PDFs I'm confused about the veraPDF behavior: Using the Java Demo of the eHealth Connector, the report shows exactly the same as your validation tools (http://software.verapdf.org/releases/1.8/verapdf-greenfield-1.8.1-installer…). Hi, is there a good place to find accurate information on changes and bug-fixes beyond the GitHub changelog? The download on the website is 1.8.4, the latest in GitHub seems to be 1.8.1 and I can’t seem to find any reference in the release notes to what’s been updated or a GitHub project that has a tag beyond 1.8.1. Can someone help point me in the right direction? We have PDFs that went from Invalid to Valid between these versions. We’ve been evaluating different tools that might create PDF/A files for our digital archive and are having a hard time interpreting the results from VeraPDF from two different directions. First, in our real-world tests of ABBYY FineReader, Adobe Acrobat, and Ghostscript, not all of the tools produces a valid PDF/A file according to VeraPDF (though we’ve had problems with each), which is perfectly fine (and not something that is a fault of the tool), but it presents the following questions: 1. Can VeraPDF highlight the relative severity of the error? Or is there info available about the relative severity of an uncalibrated color space vs. undocumented operators in a content stream 2. Are there recommendations for batch tools to fix PDFs that you might suggest? 3. The latest version of veraPDF is now available to download. This release includes new PDF information in the features report and automatic configuration of the features extractor when applying custom policy profiles. Hi there I'm new on using veraPDF and have some basic problems. Hi, I based my ZUGFeRD validation plugin (https://github.com/ZUGFeRD/ZUV) for veraPDF 1.6.3 on the embeddedFilesSample plugin in. I'd now like to perform the actual validation against the ZUGFeRD schematron, more precisely against the generated XSL file. I included ph-schematron as dependency, which will throw me noClassFound-Runtime exceptions if I only include it in the pom. I tried to solve that by shading the apparently required classes into the JAR. The issue is: if I do, I will inevitably run into a Nullpointerexception. I left one comment in the pom.xml and two in src/main/java/ZUV/ZUGFeRDExtractor.java in the current master [37794a4] which, if removed, should perform the validation but previously run into the NullPointerException at org.verapdf.processor.FeaturesPluginsLoader.initializeExtractor(FeaturesPluginsLoader.java:132) . Can someone please help? Is veraPDF using ph-schematron as well? If there was a way to invoke the veraPDF schematron validation functionality from within a plugin that would remove some redundancy and my plugin would shrink in size. thanks and kind regards Jochen

The latest release of veraPDF is available to download. The validation logic and test corpus of veraPDF 1.6 have been updated to comply with the resolutions of the PDF Association’s PDF Validation Technical Working Group (TWG). The TWG brings together PDF technology experts to analyse PDF validation issues in a transparent way. It also connects veraPDF to the ISO committee responsible for PDF/A. The GUI and command line applications feature a new update checker which lets you know if you are running the latest version of the software. If you’re using the GUI application select “Help->Check for updates”, command line users type “verapdf --version -v” to ensure you have the latest features and fixes. [Users] Vera does not finish and blocks server

Dear all, we are running veraPDF as a validation service in our system for thesis submission. Lately we encountered a problem on server where Vera instances run. In some cases, Vera is not able to produce output (because of timeout or something), so the script that called Vera instance finishes validation process and the validated file is deleted from the temp directory. Usually, it does not cause any problems, but sometimes Vera does not finish (?why?) and still runs and blocks the server and needs to be killed manually. In these situation, the Vera instances block fully the server and it rises problems for other applications running on the server too. We do not know if it is caused by fact that Vera still runs and needs the validated file that was already deleted. We do not know how to solve the problem and prevent to blocking the server with unfinished Vera instances. Has anyone experienced a same problem? Hi, I would like to validate a XML file which is embedded into a PDF-A file via VeraPDF policy validation but the feature extraction only shows metadata, like fileName, description, subtype and afRelationship. The latest version of veraPDF is now available to download. This is the final version before our version 1.0 release on January 9th 2017 making it an effective release candidate. New features include the schematron based policy checker and a fully functional greenfield implementation. The latest version of veraPDF is now available. Version 0.24 includes a prototype of batch validation in both the CLI and GUI.
